Fog is never a welcome event.
It shields the view from all directions,
drops like a curtain over the rest of the
world leaving the scene small;
nothing to see,
little to manage,
almost nothing to control,
only what can be touched or felt,
just the immediate sensations
with memory uncertain and unreliable,
a sudden bright light on the road
only accentuates the lack of sight
so we slow down, even pause to assess,
evaluate, weigh the options,
we concentrate on being present
inside a small cocoon of mystery,
we engage with the immediate,
the near, the available and
it makes me wonder if maybe
fog can become a respite of sorts,
when who or what is close to us
matters more than
the beauty
or the chaos
we see after it lifts.
