soon the winter wheat

will rise from beneath the

cold earth now frozen and bare,

an explosion of passion

with more life and hope

than seems possible even now.

a shimmering force

eager to test all the limits

of heat and cold,

moisture and drought,

darkness and light.

and grow it shall

in the hot suns of summer days

and cool nights of full moons,

luxuriating in the sway of the

winds of life bringing together

all its early hopes and dreams

to put forth a full head of new grains

and with them painting

a brushstroke of golden yellow,

radiant, vibrant and ablaze

as it comes into its fullest glory

just before it

turns gray

and looser

and quieter

preparing

to give up the seed kernels

of this year in anticipation

of the one to come

after the frosts of winter.
