Lost Garden

December 6, 2016

There was once a garden of flowers.  These were some of the more aromatic and beautiful flowers that the world had ever seen.  This was a large patch of flowers in which there were yellow flowers and red flowers and blue.  At places in the garden the flowers blended so much that people often commented that the garden made its own floral arrangements and bouquets.  So abundant were the flowers that it seemed that they would always be there in the garden and that nothing could stop this amazing display.

In some years, when drought or heat took over, the flowers struggled and seemed a little weak.  In other years, when rain was plentiful, the flowers grew so much that they expanded their space lest they choke themselves out with their growth and expansive flowers.  So strong were the flowers that no natural predators could penetrate their ground.  The garden was a beauty to behold and marvelous in its color and its aroma.  People admired it from all over the world.

On one side of the garden where the wind was especially harsh, there grew some new plants that offered protection from the changing winds and so the flowers seemed to welcome this protection and this barrier from the threat.  These plants began to grow and suddenly were quite tall leaving the beautiful flower garden without some of the sun that it needed.  The buds on the flowers began to delay opening.  The stems grew longer and longer to reach the sun; to reach around the protective barrier.  The guarding plants grew and grew until they shaded the entire patch of flowers and they now needed more of the rain water to maintain their own growth.  There was not enough sun or water for the flowers.   The flowers began to fade and to withdraw into their own space.  Soon they flowered no more and there was no garden to enjoy; only a barrier from harsh winds.  No one came to marvel anymore.
