Advent is nearing the end
Mary and Joseph are trudging
step by step towards a hope
that there will be a room,
a place for them and quite
possibly a whole new life
with a new baby.
The Shepherds and the Magi
feel something new is coming,
the angels of the
heavens are gathering,
there is joy in the air and those
who listen can hear it
though they be from different
places and tribes.
But Herod is only confused by the joy and
suspects there is a threat somewhere,
something foreign,
something sinister,
something he cannot control
and since he cannot feel it, he cannot
understand it and since he
cannot understand it, he knows
only one thing to do:
strike out at joy and
stamp it out.
tamp down the hope
build up the defenses and the walls
for joy is a mighty powerful threat.
