class=\"P11\"><span>looking as if it fell off<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P12\"><span>a truck going too fast<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P13\"><span>down old 71 and just<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P14\"><span>landed along the road<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P15\"><span>a little off center and a little<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P16\"><span>out of square<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P17\"><span>with a swinging screen door<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P18\"><span>and 4 tables<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P19\"><span>and the best tenderloin<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P20\"><span>sandwiches south of Kansas City<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P21\"><span>and a cook with a cough<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P22\"><span>that left any visitor wondering<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P23\"><span>what they got besides food<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P24\"><span>but we never got sick<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P25\"><span>and we always went back.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P26\"><span>there was the drug store<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P27\"><span>with its 2 aisles<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>of various<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P28\"><span>remedies and treatments<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P29\"><span>and a freezer<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P30\"><span>case of ice cream treats.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P31\"><span>the grocery store was on the corner<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P32\"><span>and featured a double door<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P33\"><span>and linoleum well worn past<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P34\"><span>new.<\/span>&nbsp;&#x200b;&#x200b;&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>If you were a little short<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P35\"><span>this week, you could leave a charge<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P36\"><span>on a ticket and stop by later to<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P37\"><span>get it paid. <\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>People paid in<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P38\"><span>cash or eggs never needing<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P39\"><span>any plastic card to fulfill their needs.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P40\"><span>the bank was at the other end<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P41\"><span>of the block with its old oak<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P42\"><span>panels and barred windows<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P43\"><span>reminiscent of the days<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P44\"><span>of Bonnie and Clyde although<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P45\"><span>they never came by near as anyone<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P46\"><span>knew or could recall.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P47\"><span>the old depot sat smack<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P48\"><span>between a rail siding and<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P49\"><span>the one railroad line running<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P50\"><span>through town.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P51\"><span>the station master was only<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P52\"><span>in the office on some days<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P53\"><span>or whenever there was some<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P54\"><span>freight being dropped at the siding<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P55\"><span>most days, the train just passed on<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P56\"><span>through and it wasn\u2019t many years<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P57\"><span>until that all ended and<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P58\"><span>the train came through a couple<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P59\"><span>times per day and no longer made<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P60\"><span>any effort to slow down; just<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P61\"><span>choosing to blow its horn<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P62\"><span>as a kind of<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>warning to move<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P63\"><span>out of the way and let<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P64\"><span>the world pass at a high<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P65\"><span>rate of speed.<\/span>&nbsp;&#x200b;&#x200b;&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>it was that<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P66\"><span>train that crushed the Mossan<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P67\"><span>boy one day when he just forgot<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P68\"><span>about it and took his truck<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P69\"><span>headed home and met 500 tons<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P70\"><span>of freight going 100 miles an hour.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P71\"><span>Dean walked the streets like<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P72\"><span>a guard watching over his<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P73\"><span>ward but really he was<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P74\"><span>just a 7 yr old boy in a<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P75\"><span>40 yr old body and nobody<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P76\"><span>minded and what he guarded<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P77\"><span>looked over him as well.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P78\"><span>the old grain elevator stood<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P79\"><span>like a sentinel along side the<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P80\"><span>railroad siding marking the<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P81\"><span>place and anchoring it to<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P82\"><span>the outside world through its<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P83\"><span>buying and selling and its way<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P84\"><span>of providing all the local boys<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P85\"><span>a rite of passage to manhood as<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P86\"><span>each successive generation took its<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P87\"><span>turn on the cob pile forking cobs<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P88\"><span>to the very end of the pile<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P89\"><span>the winds blew down the main street<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P90\"><span>carrying a tumble weed<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P91\"><span>from time to time and picking<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P92\"><span>up the dust of the dry summers<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P93\"><span>too hot for most folk midday<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P94\"><span>the dust from the elevator making<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P95\"><span>a fog more dense than any that<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P96\"><span>San Francisco could dream of<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P97\"><span>with colorful pools of light made<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P98\"><span>by the bare bulbs of the driveways<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P99\"><span>or the headlights of old trucks<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P100\"><span>bringing whatever crop the ground<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P101\"><span>had brought forth that season and<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P102\"><span>ready to be traded in for cash or credit<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P103\"><span>making another year possible on this<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P104\"><span>earth.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P105\"><span>The men as dirty and sweaty as a human<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P106\"><span>body came be spending all day in the hot<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P107\"><span>fog of grain dust pitting their very strength<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P108\"><span>and lungs against a foe that was unrelenting<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P109\"><span>and unforegiving.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P110\"><span>breathing air that was 1 part oxygen to 4 parts<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P111\"><span>dirt, they never complained or asked for<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P112\"><span>help for this is how the work got done<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>and<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P113\"><span>how the bills got paid and the kids sent off to<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P114\"><span>college so that they would never have to do<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P115\"><span>this work but who would also never have<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P116\"><span>the memory of the cold water being splashed on a face that had changed colors<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P117\"><span>and the shirts and pants and socks so filthy that<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P118\"><span>they could not be taken into the house; had to be left in the garage or on the porch after work<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P119\"><span>leaving them to run to the shower in underwear just as sweat soaked.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P120\"><span>on Friday nights the town gathered at the<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<\/p><p class=\"P121\"><span>high school gym and watched the farm boys<\/span><\/p><p class=\"P122\"><span>play basketball like it had been invented for them; stretching muscles that had worked all<\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>week <\/span>&#x200b;&#x200b;&nbsp;<span>and were ready to spring higher and faster than any of their opponents and so the team was the pride and the joy and the hope fo the whole town.
